Elizabeth Hoffer

Elizabeth Hoffer was a B.A. and then M.A. student in the Department of Classics and Archaeology at Brock University and was a member of the Marzamemi Maritime Heritage Project from 2018 to 2023. She specialized in 3D imaging and conducted extensive scanning projects using Artec Eva and Faro Focus S70 scanners. She assisted with the digital recording of architectural components excavated from the Marzamemi 2 shipwreck and coordinated several large-scale scanning projects to record historic tuna processing sites and fishing boats in Marzamemi and Portopalo di Capo Passero. With an eye toward long-term trends of Mediterranean movement, her work included the digital recording of former fishing boats used to bring migrants across the Mediterranean. Elizabeth’s M.A. research project utilized 3D modeling to digitally analyze the columns from the church wreck (many of which are broken or heavily eroded) as a path toward estimating the total quantity and weight of this component of the ship’s architectural cargo.
