Researcher, Institute of Nautical Archaeology

Sheila Matthews

Sheila studied with George Bass and Dick Steffy in the Nautical Archaeology Program at Texas A&M University, and has been working ever since with the Institute of Nautical Archeology in Turkey. She has participated in many underwater projects in Turkey, Kenya, Sri Lanka, and more recently in Sicily at Marzamemi and Vendicari. Early on, she focused on ancient ship construction and archeological illustration, and spent several years conserving and reassembling the 11th-century CE ship excavated in Serçe Limanı (Turkey). Matthews later took up underwater mapping and photogrammetry of excavation sites and soon segued into working with CAD programs, 3D imaging, and digital scanning. She has brought this expertise to the team’s projects in the field in Sicily and back in the lab, where she has guided students in using 3D imaging to develop site plans, to produce artifact illustrations, and most recently to help answer questions about cargos. She has published articles in the International Journal of Nautical Archaeology and has co-authored two volumes of Serçe Limani: An Eleventh-Century Shipwreck. She is currently co-authoring the final report of Santo Antonio de Tanna: 16th-Cent. Portuguese Shipwreck.
