Vendicari Maritime Landscape Project

Survey and test excavations between 2018 and 2025 aimed to bring to light the maritime landscape and long-term dynamics of the fishing and trading community at Vendicari in southeast Sicily. Systematic underwater archaeological survey in the two bays here led to the investigation of multiple potential ancient, medieval, historical, and modern wrecks and other sites, including dozens of ballast piles, along with hundreds of artifacts that together confirm the widespread and shifting cultural entanglements of the site and the site and the deep archaeological potential of the area. Preliminary reports have been published in Archaeologia Maritima Mediterranea, and a more comprehensive study is in preparation.
