Regional Economies in Action: Amphora Standardization in the Roman and Byzantine Mediterranean

The volume contains 13 contributions dealing with ancient and medieval economy from an archaeological perspective based on the standardization of material evidences. Standardization has always been a problematic subject for archaeologist dealing with economic studies in pre-industrial periods. In this volume we deal with this subject from the study of the pottery containers that brought liquid commodities from the different Mediterranean regions during the 1st millennium BC until the late Middle Ages.

Der Band legt die Ergebnisse eines internationalen Kolloquiums am Österreichischen Archäologischen Institut vor, das sich mit der Produktion von Amphoren und den in ihnen transportierten und aufbewahrten Gütern auseinandersetzte. Amphoren zählen zu den am meist verbreiteten archäologischen Artefakten rund um das gesamte Mittelmeer, zumal sie in nahezu jeder Region produziert wurden. Die einzelnen Beiträge – jeder einer bestimmten Fragestellung und Problematik gewidmet – nähern sich archäologisch und historisch dem bislang sehr kontroversiell diskutierten Thema der Standardisierung der Transportamphoren aus verschiedenen Sichtweisen und aus den unterschiedlichen Mittelmeerregionen an.

Standardisierung kann sich in mannigfaltiger Weise äußern, etwa in formalen Kriterien, in Volumina, in Werkstättenstrukturen ebenso wie in epigrafischen Zeugnissen in Form von Inhaltsangaben oder Produktinformationen. Zur Diskussion stehen aber auch wirtschaftliche, soziale und politische Kontexte, von der vorrömischen bis zur spätbyzantinischen und von der westlichen Iberischen Halbinsel bis zum SchwarzenMeer und der Levante, die zu standardisierten Produkten beigetragen haben könnten. Regionaler Handel bis hin zu Massenproduktion und interregionaler Versand, staatlicheund militärische Versorgung im Vergleich zu marktbasiertem Austausch sind nur einige der in diesem Band behandelten Aspekte.
